I have a confession.

While cleaning this weekend, I realized my reusable bags were overflowing from their 13 x 13 container. Naturally, at 1:37 am, I took them all out, organized them by size, and neatly arranged them on my living room floor to count them.
I own 32 reusable bags.
[insert long pause and a deep sigh]
Reusable bags are intended to reduce waste and encourage sustainability. But at what point does “eco-friendly” secretly become overconsumption?
Reusable bags require materials, energy, and water to produce. According to Yahoo Finance, “reusing a single plastic bag three times has the same environmental impact as using a cotton tote bag 393 times.” Some of the bags in the photo above have never been used once. So if I’m rotating the same 6–8 bags every week… what exactly are the other 24 doing? Vibes.
How many of us grab free totes at events?
Bought one because we forgot ours at home?
Keep extras “just in case”?
Or simply loved the design?
No judgment. I clearly participated! ♥️
There’s a fair argument that it doesn’t matter — at least they’re not plastic. But sustainability isn’t just about swapping materials. It’s also about consumption patterns.
I would love to hear your thoughts:
- How might we personally determine how many reusable bags are enough?
- How might we keep reusable bags trendy while reducing overconsumption?
- What business opportunities exist at this intersection?
Also, am I alone? Chime in!
P.S. I am now down to 10 bags! 😀
